Information Provided by the school:

Aloha College is a private, fee-paying, independent, co-educational school. It is a not-for-profit educational organisation owned by a charitable trust and administered by a Board of Trustees, which by statute is composed of the current parents of the college. Any surplus income from the budget is re-invested in the development and improvement of the College. The College Trust benefits from its tax-free status.

Aloha College is authorised by the Spanish Ministry of Education to operate both as a British-style school in Spain following the guidelines of the British National Curriculum and as a Spanish-style school offering the Spanish LOGSE programme. Under this dual-curriculum arrangement, all pupils study English and Spanish and those students who wish to do so are able to gain qualifications under both the Spanish and British examination system.

The college presents candidates for IGCSE examinations and is an important centre in southern Spain for the examinations of the University of Cambridge in English as a Second Language. Students at pre-university level follow a programme leading to the award of the International Baccalaureate Diploma and may also acquire national qualifications by careful integration into the curriculum of courses leading to ESO, Bachillerato and Selectividad, thereby ensuring entry to universities world-wide including Europe, particularly UK and Spain, and USA.

The student body consists of 39 nationalities - including 23% Spanish and 32% British - and, as befits an international community, there is a strong emphasis on language teaching. In addition to English, Spanish, French and German, Swedish and Russian are also provided. The staff are fully qualified UK or Spanish graduates, supported by a full-time Schools Librarian, a Science technician and qualified Nursery Nurses in the Foundation Stage department.

Aloha College was purpose-built in 1982 and extended in 1990 and 1996 to cover 3,000 sq m on 4 floors. In addition to normal classroom provision, the modern facilities include four well-equipped laboratories, 2 state-of-the-art computer suites (with internet and e-mail facilities for every student), an outstanding library with computer provision, an art studio with photographic darkroom. There are two all-weather sports pitches (one is Astroturf) and students follow a varied and structured outdoor pursuits programme. Expressive Arts teaching forms part of the normal curriculum, and extra-curricular activities include ballet, modern dance and a variety of sporting or artistic activities.

In September 2004, the Senior School pupils will move into brand-new Arts and Science blocks, where the spacious, airy classrooms are also air-conditioned, as is the new Library. Apart from enjoying fabulous views of the sea and mountains, the pupils will also have access to the latest equipment in science and IT.

The school year is organised on a 3-termly basis, starting in early September and ending in the last week of June. The school day runs from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm and there is a full school meals service in the middle of the day. Supervised school bus services run from Fuengirola and Estepona plus all intermediate points.

Admission is by submission of school reports, interview and testing, carried out by the relevant Head of School.

Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information presented in this prospectus. Nonetheless Aloha College is a living institution and changes may be made at short notice. This prospectus, therefore, does not form a contract between parents and school.

Information Provided by the school :

Sotogrande International School (SIS), founded in 1978, is a leading British-style international, co-educational, day and boarding school, for pupils aged 3-18 years, offering a high quality education to the international community of southern Europe and northern Africa.

The school recently moved to a modern, high-technology campus that encourages the development of skills required for the 21st century. The new location is in a beautiful wooded area of Andalucia on the Costa del Sol between Gibraltar and Estepona, with stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding countryside. The campus is designed to reflect our philosophy of collaborative learning that develops active, high-achieving, life-long learners, with an understanding and appreciation of the cultural diversity that surrounds them.

Four specially designed teaching buildings surround a central Learning Centre which houses a theatre, multimedia library and research centre, computer suite, art and music studios, cafeteria and main reception. The Early Years building includes: a specialist library; a wealth of active learning resources; and a play area onto which the classrooms have direct access. The Primary school is based on the innovative "pod" concept where collaborative learning is encouraged through an integrated curriculum and timetable. The Secondary school is also arranged in pods, with each one reflecting a particular area of the syllabus. The science pod includes three modern, well-equipped laboratories.

Our curriculum prepares pupils for a technological, multicultural, global society. The Primary School offers the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IBPYP). Secondary students follow a programme based on the best of English, Spanish and international curricula leading to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and GCSE examinations in Year 11. In Years 12-13, we offer the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma programme, from which all of our graduates have gained entrance to good universities worldwide.
The school places great emphasis on technology as a tool to aid learning. A wireless communication network links the entire campus so that students can access the internet and the school intranet via desktop or laptop computers. Many classrooms also have data-projectors and interactive white boards to enable the use of technology throughout the learning process.

Our commitment to outdoor and physical education is reflected in the sports facilities which include a large multi-purpose sports hall, 25m swimming pool and an all-weather sports pitch and running track. There is a full and diverse extra-curricular programme, with many activities either on campus or using the wealth of nearby facilities. There are frequent excursions, trips and exchanges arranged for sporting, cultural and educational purposes.

Our boarders live in a modern, spacious boarding house on the campus, with all the comforts that make it a home. Boarders have full access to all school facilities to provide excellent opportunities for recreation and serious study.

The school is authorised by the Spanish authorities and offers a convalidated programme, including Selectividad, that allows students to prepare for entry to Spanish universities. We also offer a programme of English language and special educational needs support where required.

Our well-qualified teachers are mostly British, with excellent international and/or British experience. Other staff nationalities include Spanish, American, French, South African and German.

SIS is an IB World School, a member of the Council of British Independent Schools of the European Community (COBISEC), the European Council of International Schools (ECIS) and the National Association of British Schools in Spain (NABSS).

All interested applicants receive a warm welcome to their inquiries. Our admissions process includes placement tests and the requirement to supply previous school reports. School buses transport students from a wide catchment area.
